The Music of Brain Shift Radio

All of the music on Brain Shift Radio is composed and performed by BSR co-founder Jeff Strong (read Jeff's blog here). Each of the rhythm tracks use acoustic percussion instruments. Tracks employing single drums were played live, while the multi-instrument tracks utilize multi-tracking and overdubbing techniques with Jeff assuming the role of one-man-band.

The ambient tracks are all performed on a variety of keyboards and synthesizers. These are human performances with no loops or corrections.

If you listen carefully (which you aren't supposed to do, by the way, because this music is meant to be background stimulus :-) you will hear the ocassional mistake and many variations in tempo, timbre, and timing. This is important because the human brain is far more responsive to music with this human element.

The reason for offering separate rhythm and ambient tracks is one we cover a lot in the Articles section of the website, but to offer an overview, the rhythm track is the key to getting your brain to shift. The underlying pulse of the rhythm drives your brain to the desired state while the variations in the rhythm - both the pitches and the accents - stimulate the brain in specific ways.

The ambient instrumental tracks act as modulators and modifiers to the rhythm tracks, reducing or altering the effects of the rhythm on the brain. In a purely clinical setting ambient tracks are generally not used, but for Brain Shift Radio we include them so that you have more control over your experience with the rhythms. This also makes it more fun.

“Certainly, the site’s interface and presentation are impeccable. Ambient and rhythmic tracks can be remixed and swapped to the listener’s pleasure; the community is active in building mixes; and the music streams at a high-quality, through an elegantly simple player.”

“In short: you’re distracted. So you’ll head here, select “I’d like to focus” from their preset playlists, along with your desired intensity level: “laser-like.” Twenty minutes of rapid-fire drums and medieval alpha strings later, and you’ve just cleared your to-do list.”

“Wow!  I’m logged in. This is awesome! Just the feature of mixing tracks is awesome in itself.  That almost makes it seems like a synth, or a cool app where you actually manipulate the song. It totally works. I’m excited to create some new ‘focus’ tracks to use while I work.”

While I was playing [Brain Shift Radio] my son laid down and closed his eyes... I've never seen anything like it. He never has been this calm in his life."
